Food poisoning and how to protect from it?

Food poisoning can effect any body, anytime but we can protect ourselves by learning the causes, and symptoms to fight it. You can search for the topic and get details about 'food poising' from any health related site, but this post would help you learn some basics of it, while providing some useful links to read more about the topic.

"Food poisoning is an acute gastroenteritis caused by the consumption of a food material or a drink which contains the pathogenic micro organism or their toxins or poisonous chemicals.:

A group of persons will be affected with same type of symptoms ,and they give a history of consumption of a common food before few hours.

Types of food poisoning

1) Bacterial food poisoning:

Here the micro organisms called bacteria are responsible. The food material may contain the pathogenic bacteria or their toxin and will be ingested along with the food.

2) Non bacterial food poisoning:

Due to the presence of toxic chemicals like fertilizers, insecticides, heavy metals and etc.

Bacterial food poisoning:

All bacteria are not harmful. There are some pathogenic bacteria which secrete toxins and cause clinical manifestations. These organisms enter the human body through food articles or drinks.

How food poisoning occurs:

1) Presence of bacteria in the water.

2) The raw materials for the food may contain toxins.

3) Premises where the food is prepared may contain micro organisms or toxins.

4) Food handlers may have some infectious diseases.

5) Some animals like dogs, rats may contaminate the food.

6) If prepared food is kept in the room temperature for a long time and heated again can make a chance for food poisoning.

7) Purposely some body mixing toxins in the food.

How to investigate food poisoning?

1) Examine each and every person affected.

2) Water sample should be tested.

3) Kitchen, store room and food samples should be examined.

4) The cook and food handlers should be questioned and examined.

5) Samples of vomitus and stool of all victims should be tested to identify the bacteria.

How to prevent food poisoning:-
1) Only purified water should be used.

2) Hygiene should be maintained by all persons keeping contact with food.

3) Workers should use masks, cap and gloves during cooking and serving.

4) Sick individuals should not come in contact with food materials.

5) Kitchen and premises should be neat and clean.

5) Vessels should be washed with soap and hot water.

6) Should not keep the prepared food for a long time in room temperature.

7) All food materials should be kept in closed containers.

8) Animals like dog, cat, rat etc should not come in contact with food materials.

9) Vegetables should be washed before cooking.

10) Meat should be fresh and should be purchased from recognized slaughter house.

Online availablity of eco-friendly medical scrubs

One of my cousins who is in medical profession was talking about their uniform and she said that sometimes she is bored wearing same medical 'scrubs' daily. As the term 'scrubs' was new to me, I asked her the details about it and she handed over some information links to me.

According to a definition by 'Wikipedia': Scrubs are the shirts and trousers or gowns worn by nurses, surgeons, and other operating room personnel when "scrubbing in" for surgery. They are designed to be simple with minimal places for dirt to hide, easy to launder, and cheap to replace if damaged or stained irreparably. The wearing of scrubs has been extended outside of surgery in many hospitals. Originally issued as replacement clothing if street clothing was contaminated, scrubs are now worn by any hospital personnel in any clean environment.

Any medical uniform consisting of a short-sleeve shirt and pants are known as "scrubs". Scrubs may also include a waist-length long-sleeved jacket with no lapels and stockinette cuffs, known as a "warm-up jacket". Nearly all patient care personnel in Canada and the United States wear some form of scrubs while on duty, as do some staffers in doctor, dental and veterinary offices. Support staff such as custodians and unit clerks also wear scrubs in some facilities.

Scrubs worn in surgery are almost always colored solid light green, light blue or a light green-blue shade, although some medical centers have switched to pink as a theft deterrent. Surgical scrubs are rarely owned by the wearer; due to concerns about home laundering and sterility issues, these scrubs are hospital-owned or hospital-leased through a commercial linen service.

Non-surgical scrubs come in a wider variety of colors and patterns, ranging from official issue garments to custom made, whether by commercial uniform companies or by home-sewing using commercially available printed patterns.

Where to buy scrubs? 'Scrubs & Beyond' is a great online source for medical scrubs, shoes and more. Specialty of this online store is that it offers variety of scrubs from which 'Eco friendly scrubs' are really nice as these scrubs are made with breathable and comfortable fabrics.

The collection of nursing scrubs include mens scrubs, nursing shoes, clogs, and nursing accessories.

Develop your skills with learning about 'Wisdom' and 'Wise Living'

If we talk about 'wisdom' it is being wise or intelligent in very simple words. We call 'wise' to an intelligent or matured person. Let's see what famous people or scholars have said about 'wisdom':

- David Starr Jordan: Wisdom is knowing what to do next; Skill is knowing how ot do it, and Virtue is doing it.

- Elbert Hubbard: To know when to be generous and when firm—that is wisdom.

- Immanuel Kant: Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life.

It is a fact that like other skills, wisdom can be acquired or learned. Skill development is a process which enhances human capabilities and this process results in self growth, self satisfaction.

'The Wisdom Page' is a compilation of wisdom-related resources — various on-line texts concerning wisdom, references to books about wisdom, information about organizations that promote wisdom, wise activities, and listener groups concerned with aspects of wisdom.

There are many 'FREE CONTEMPORARY BOOKS ABOUT WISDOM AND WISE LIVING' for download and online reading.

They also offer'WISDOM 101' a free online course in practical wisdom. It is the outgrowth of a classroom course given at Rollins College by Professor Alan Nordstrom, and uses short chapters from Cop Macdonald's book GETTING A LIFE to stir thinking about many common life situations.

What is this course about?

'This free online course is about crafting full, rich, creative, and enjoyable lives for ourselves — lives that are significant, lives that contribute in some way to the world around us. The course is rooted in the idea that some steps toward wisdom require nothing more than a fresh look at common life situations, nothing more than an appreciation of the difference between skillful and unskillful ways of dealing with those situations.'

Stay healthy by identifying your genetic health risks

Everyone wants to stay healthy to enjoy life for long but as many diseases are hereditary it is difficult to stay away from in a fit form always.

Now scientific research has changed the scenario of hereditary diseases as it is now possible to look inside the DNA to uncover personal, family and historical records. By identifying your genetic risks and discover your ancestry you can be more conscious about the future risks to your health.

DNA: DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. Nearly every cell in a person’s body has the same DNA.

Why we should think about having a DNA test?

'A Gene SNP DNA Screening Analysis examines your DNA to help make the dietary and lifestyle changes best suited for your particular needs, based upon individualized gene screening.'

Your health is a result of interactions between your genes and lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, stress, smoking and alcohol. It is your genetic make-up that determines which nutrients are used and how they are used; the way toxins are removed, what happens to any waste products and how efficient and effective these key processes are within the body. However, by adjusting your lifestyle, you can have a great impact on how your genes work and compensate for areas in which your genes are not functioning at an optimal level.

The Link between Genes and Disease

Many diseases have roots in our genes. Genes-through the proteins they encode-determine how efficiently we process foods, how effectively we detoxify poisons and how vigorously we respond to infections. More than 4,000 diseases are thought to stem from mutated genes inherited from one’s mother and/or father. When a gene contains a mutation, the protein encoded by the gene will be abnormal. Some protein changes are insignificant, while others are disabling. Common disorders such as heart disease, cancer, and asthma arise from a complex interplay among multiple genes and exposure to factors in the environment.

Learn about genetics at 'Genetic Home Reference'

I can still remember my college years when we science students has to to the library for further studies. But now internet has made this search and research work so easy that a child can easily discover the whole world with the touch of finger. There are lots of online resources and sites which offer useful information helping us know more about the world around us.

Biology students and teachers can equally get useful information about conditions, genes, chromosomes and further bookmark the useful resources by going to 'Genetic Home Reference'

Genetic Home Reference is the National Library of Medicine's web site for consumer information about genetic conditions and the genes or chromosomes related to those conditions.

'Help Me Understand Genetics' presents basic information about genetics in clear language and provides links to online resources. Popular topics discussed in the book are:
1. What is DNA?
2. What is a gene mutation and how do mutations occur?
3. What is a chromosome?
4. What is gene therapy?
5. What is mitochondrial DNA?

Worried about 'Swine flu'?

'Swine flu' is only spread in few countries but in the whole world people are worried about this new disease. Many of us are searching the world wide web to get information about this epidemic. I have compiled few basic information about swine flu in this article along with few useful resources to learn more about this disease.

We know that in humans, the symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of influenza and of influenza-like illness in general, namely chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort. The strain responsible for the 2009 swine flu outbreak in most cases causes only mild symptoms and the infected person makes a full recovery without requiring medical attention and without the use of antiviral medicines.

Definition of Wikipedia says: Swine influenza (also swine flu) refers to influenza caused by any strain of the influenza virus endemic in pigs (swine). Strains endemic in swine are called swine influenza virus (SIV)

Swine flu is common in swine and rare in humans. People who work with swine, especially people with intense exposures, are at risk of catching swine influenza if the swine carry a strain able to infect humans.

Good news is that the majority of people infected with the virus make a full recovery without requiring medical attention or antiviral drugs. If a person gets sick, antiviral drugs can make the illness milder and make the patient feel better faster

For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).

Latest from 'reuters': The World Health Organization said on Wednesday it was moving closer to declaring a pandemic alert phase 5 for swine flu.

"It appears we are moving closer to that, but we are not there yet," Keiji Fukuda, WHO acting assistant director-general, said, adding that moving to phase 5 from the current phase 4 would be a significant step.

The WHO has said it might raise its pandemic alert level to phase five -- the second highest -- if it were confirmed that infected people in at least two countries were spreading the disease to other people in a sustained way.

Self growth with 'gratitude'

People who want to live a better life with the best of their skill level are enthusiastic about self development/self growth. 'Gratitude' or being grateful is a self improvement term which we are going to learn today. There is a review of an online community where you can

Wikipedia explains the word 'Gratitude' in these words: Gratitude, thankfulness, or appreciation is a positive emotion or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit that one has received or will receive.

Gratitude is an emotion that occurs after people receive help, depending on how they interpret the situation. Specifically, gratitude is experienced if people perceive the help they receive as valuable to them, costly to their benefactor, and given by the benefactor with benevolent intentions (rather than ulterior motives).

Gratitude may also serve to reinforce future pro social behavior in benefactors. For example, one experiment found that customers of a jewelry store who were called and thanked showed a subsequent 70% increase in purchases. In comparison, customers who were thanked and told about a sale showed only a 30% increase in purchases, and customers who were not called at all did not show an increase

Five daily gratitude is an online community gratitude journal to help you increase your hope, optimism and happiness.

It is a positive psychology tool that helps you integrate the power of gratitude into your life by providing a quick and easy way to list five things you are thankful for each day.. It also helps you consistently take advantage of this powerful positive psychology technique by providing a subscription service that sends you a morning email reminder so you can stick to your commitment of increasing your happiness through writing Five Daily Gratitudes.

Latest Psychological research shows that integrating the power of gratitude significantly increases your optimism, health, and self-esteem as well as improves your sleep, motivation, relationships, and even your career..

Start spending a few minutes each morning to focus your mind on the positive things in your life and join this positive psychology movement of bringing happiness and gratitude to as many people as possible by listing your own Five Daily Gratitudes! Start cultivating the power of thankfulness today.

The research shows that in order to receive the psychological benefits of this powerful positive psychology technique you need to be consistent in writing out Five Daily Gratitudes.

What are the benefits of using Five Daily Gratitudes?
As UC Davis psychologist Robert Emmons has demonstrated in his research, “The evidence that cultivating gratefulness is good for you is overwhelming. Gratitude is quality that we should aspire to as a part and parcel of personal growth…Specifically, we have shown that gratitude is positively related to such critical outcomes as life satisfaction, vitality, happiness, self-esteem, optimism, hope, empathy, and willingness to provide emotional and tangible support for other people, whereas being ungrateful is related to anxiety, depression, envy, materialism, and loneliness.

Benefits of being grateful:

"Collectively, such studies present credible evidence that feeling grateful generates a ripple effect through every area of our lives, potentially satisfying our deepest yearnings – our desire for happiness, our pursuit of better relationships, and our ceaseless quest for inner peace, wholeness, and contentment. Gratitude is more, through than a tool for self-improvement.

Gratitude is a way of life."

A large body of recent work has suggested that people who are more grateful have higher levels of well-being. Grateful people are happier, less depressed, less stressed, and more satisfied with their lives and social relationships.

Grateful people also have higher levels of control of their environments, personal growth, purpose in life, and self acceptance.

Grateful people have more positive ways of coping with the difficulties they experience in life, being more likely to seek support from other people, reinterpreted and grow from the experience, and spend more time planning how to deal with the problem.

Grateful people also have less negative coping strategies, being less likely to try and avoid the problem, deny there is a problem, blame themselves, or cope through substance use.

Grateful people sleep better, and this seems to be because they think less negative and more positive thoughts just before going to sleep.

Some fragrance tips and facts

This article provides many tips and facts about fragrances, and as it is in question answer format, it would be easy to learn either the theories we believed are true or false?

It is not true that the sense of smell is keener in the morning than it is later in the day. Our sense of smell is not as sharp in the morning as it is later in the day. More upbeat, "bright" scents can be appreciated at the beginning of the day to sharpen the senses. Once you've awakened your sense of smell, choose fragrances that correspond with your mood, fashion or the occasion.

As we get older, can our sense of smell begin to diminish as is does for our eye sight and hearing?
Constant, creative use of all our senses can help to keep them at peak performance well into old age. It may be the time in a person's life to change fragrance type, i.e., one that gives a fast and stronger odor impression.

Can a person's medication, smoking affect how a fragrance smells?
Yes. The wearer may think a fragrance formula has been changed when instead it is a change in diet, medication or lifestyle which has caused the new perception of scent. What one eats on a regular basis can affect the way a fragrance smells and lasts on a person's skin. If one is on a high fat, spicy diet, for example, fragrance will be more intense. If you have recently changed your diet dramatically, skin chemistry may change, causing fragrance to smell differently on you.

Can one improve one's sense of smell after 50?
Many men and women over 50 begin to lose their ability to fully appreciate smell sensations. Though current research reveals that women are less apt to lose their sense of smell as quickly as men at the same age, older people often prefer stronger scents. They must be careful not to overdo their fragrance applications, particularly in warm weather or if they know they are going to be in stressful situations.

Can one lose one's sense of smell?
Yes, particularly if one has a cold, the flu or if you have suffered a head injury. If the condition persists, see a physician.

Can perfume be kept indefinitely?
Once a bottle of perfume is opened it is meant to be used. Otherwise it will begin to fade with time. Long exposure to strong sunlight or extremes in temperature can disturb the delicate balance of the perfume and change its scent. Perfume, to last, should be kept in a cool, dry place away from direct light.

Do women have a keener sense of smell than men?
Yes, but much of it learned. On a day-to-day basis women in our society are encouraged to use their noses more often than men through their interest in cooking, flower arrangements, creating interior environments, and the early use of fragrance products. In addition, according to scientific research, the fluctuation in a woman's sense of smell, during a 24-hour period, is systematically greater than a man's.

Does dry skin require a more generous fragrance application?
Yes, dry skin does not hold fragrances as long as oily skin and it should be reapplied more often throughout the day.
If a person is inclined to perspire, does this affect the impact of fragrance?
Yes, body heat builds up, fragrance intensifies.

If fragrance is applied in the morning, will it last throughout the day?
No, fragrance is not formulated to last all day. It should be refreshed periodically. Approximately every three to four hours.

Is it important to apply fragrance all over the body?
Yes, fragrance rises. If a woman applies her fragrance just behind her ears, or a man his aftershave just on his face, the scent will slowly rise and disappear.

Is it true that a person has his or her own individual "smell fingerprint"?

Yes. Each of us has our own unique odor identity which is the sum total of our heredity (genes), skin type (dry/oily/light/dark), hair color, diet, whether or not we take medications, are under stress, the environment in which we live, etc.
Is it true that fragrance can be kept in the refrigerator for a refresher pickup?
Yes, but only colognes and toilet waters. Perfumes should not be exposed to extreme cold or heat because either may upset its delicate balance.

Is it true that fragrance reacts differently on blondes, brunettes and redheads?
Yes. Blonds -- with a fair skin will be happiest with long-lasting multi-floral creations. Their skin is often dry causing fragrances that are too subtle to evaporate rapidly.

Brunettes -- usually have medium-to-dark skin which contains natural oils, allowing scents to last longer. Dramatic orientals are often favorites.

Redheads -- have extremely fair and delicate skin which may be incompatible with fragrances which have predominant green notes.
Is it true the sense of smell is not as keen in the winter as it is in the summer?
Yes, heat increases the impact of odor. In the summer there are so many fascinating "smell" signals around us, and we are more conscious of our sense of smell and certainly enjoy it to the fullest. In hot weather, each fragrance application goes a long way-so lighter fragrances should be worn.

May fragrance be sprayed on the hair?
Only if the hair is freshly-shampoed. Oils and dirt which accumulate on the hair and scalp intensify fragrance and can distort it. Also, don't spray fragrance on extremely dry or brittle hair.

Should fragrance be applied to clothes?
No, fragrance is formulated only to be applied to the skin. If applied to fabric, the fibers could change the character of the fragrance. The scent might also stain the fabric.

Should fragrance be applied to the palms of your hands?
Yes, it is a wonderful way to enjoy the fragrance for oneself.

When traveling to a "high altitude" will fragrance be affected?
Yes, high altitude decreases the long-lasting effects of fragrance so it should be applied more often. High altitudes also weaken the strength of a fragrance message. Choose stronger fragrances.

Why is it important to test no more than three fragrances at one time?
The sense of smell quickly develops odor fatigue if it is exposed to too many sensations in a short period of time.

Avoid refind sugar to keep you safe from acne

Refinded sugar which is a main part of our food including bread, is not good for diabetic patients and most of them rely on sugar alternative or sugar free products. But it is now believed that there is a link between use of sugar and acne (skin disease)

Recent studies have shown that what matters may not be sugar itself but a food’s glycemic index, or the speed and extent to which it raises blood glucose levels. Foods that have a high glycemic index — and as a result raise glucose levels rapidly — cause the body to release a flood of insulin and other hormones, which some scientists suspect can stimulate oil production and inflame the skin.

To test the theory, scientists recruited 50 men and boys ages 15 to 25, all of them with acne, and followed their progress for 12 weeks. Some subjects stuck to a typical diet that included high-glycemic foods like white bread, sweetened cereals and pasta, and the others were given foods higher in protein and lower on the glycemic scale, like fish, whole-grain breads and fruit.

At the end of the study, published in 2007, the subjects on the low-glycemic diet had far greater reductions in skin lesions and other symptoms of acne than the control group. They also showed reductions in their levels of free, circulating androgens, the male hormones known to cause acne, suggesting that hormones played a role.

Other studies have found similar connections between high-glycemic foods and acne, though scientists say more research is needed.

There is some evidence that foods high in sugar can worsen acne.

Link to the original article: 'NY Times'

More about the topic:

'Dietary interventions using low–glycemic load carbohydrates may have therapeutic potential in the treatment of acne because of the beneficial endocrine effects of these diets. Low–glycemic load diets are associated with a reduced risk for type 2 diabetes, and dietary interventions using low–glycemic load carbohydrates improve insulin sensitivity.

Furthermore, a large-scale intervention has demonstrated that diets rich in low–glycemic load foods reduced serum testosterone and fasting glucose levels while improving insulin metabolism and increasing concentrations of SHBG. These endocrine changes are consistent with those known to promote normal follicular cell proliferation and to reduce sebum production.

It is possible that low–glycemic load diets may have therapeutic potential in reducing symptoms of acne, a disease virtually unknown to the Aché and Kitavans.'

The worst risk of depression or anxiety is that effected individuals easily become addict. This situation needs proper treatment. Long term drug rehab is being used to treat addiction to any kind of drugs including heroin, alcohol, crystal meth, cocaine, gambling, marijuana, and prescription pain killers.

Depression affects approximately 19 million Americans, or 9.5% of the population in any given one-year period. At some point in their lives, 10%-25% of women and 5%-12% of men will likely become clinically depressed. In fact, it affects so many people that it is often referred to as the "common cold" of mental illness. It is estimated that depression exacts an economic cost of over $30 billion each year, but the cost of human suffering cannot be measured. Depression not only causes suffering to those who are depressed, but it also causes great difficulty for their family and friends who often do not know how to help.

Drink enough water to keep you safe from back pain

Water is the most important nutrient which we need to live healthy. We all know the bad effects of dyhydration for health but dehydration can worsen your back pain as well. It is strange to hear that water can help you overcome your back pain easily and naturally but it is true.

Low back pain and ankylosing arthritis of the spine are signs of water shortage in the spinal column and discs - the water cushions that support the weight of the body. These conditions should be treated with increased water intake - not a commercial treatment, but a very effective one.

Effects of disc dehydration on back pains:
Like most other body systems, the discs in the back require lots of water to work properly. The body must be well hydrated for water to leave other vital areas, like circulation or the brain & enter the discs. Our body weight is supported by 23 discs & 24 vertebrae along the spinal column.

The discs, in addition to other parts of the spinal column, hold water which stabilizes them & allow them to support body weight. When the weight press squeezes out water from the disc and the water is not replaced disc dehydration occurs. Dehydrated discs are then less able to support body weight.

Dehydration & sciatica:
Dehydrated discs become less stable. So they start to shift in the spine. Eventually they press on the sciatic nerve causing intense, radiating pain, pain that is often felt down one or the other leg.
Sciatic pain is the more serious phase of disc dehydration. It is also a sign of impending chronic pain.

As disc dehydration continues, problem is increasingly exacerbated. Here too, the typical back pain guide fails to include dehydration as involved in the development of sciatica.

In addition to dehydration’s involvement in back problems, muscles that aren’t properly conditioned can result in serious back problems.

Well-developed, flexible back muscles help the spinal column absorb shock and help keep the discs stable during stressful movements.

Our bodies are more than half water. We must replace, on the average 80 to 96ounces of water per day that is used or lost by respiration, urination, and perspiration. We can get some water by eating foods that are high in water. but most of our water will come from drinking eight to ten cups of water per day.

Tips to keep you safe from back pain

Working for long hours beside computers at home or at office is a part of our life but if we don't care about our sitting posture, we can get back or shoulder pain. I am one of those people who work for whole day (half day teaching and sitting for some intervals at chair and half day in front of computer) resulting in aching back and shoulders. I am not alone with these symptoms:

- Every year, 100’s of Millions of people suffer from back pain.
- Between 2 - 6 million Americans suffer serious back pain every year.

At some point in their lives, 4 out of 5 adults will suffer a pain severe enough to warrant medical care.
For many years, surgery was often performed on sufferers. However, surgery has come to be increasingly viewed as ineffective and unneccesary.

Back pain can arise from a number of conditions. The symptoms generally are sharp pain or numbness most often occurring in the lower back or neck causing reduced function and mobility. Common causes can be strained muscle/ligament as a result of lifting or awkward movements or a herniated disk that applies pressure to a nerve. But the prevention is the best way to keep away from this discomfort condition.

The University of Maryland Medical Center has provided these tips to help you safe from back pain:

TIPS to keep you safe from back pain
- Pay attention to your posture, whether you're standing or sitting. Make sure your ears, shoulders and hips all line up.

- Avoid standing for long periods. If you must stand, use a stool and alternate resting each foot on it.

- Wear comfortable, cushioned shoes without heels if you walk a lot.

- Choose a straight-backed, adjustable chair with armrests and a swivel seat for your desk chair.

Toxins and pollution facts

Envirnmental pollution and toxins are causing many health risks for mankind. Pollution around our environment is coming from air, water and human wastage. But we are for sure responsible for this situation as we are not seriously concerned to take practical steps towards handling the issues. These facts and statistics would be an eye opener for many of us. And may be it can help us plan to get rid of toxins and pollution around us.

- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 500,000 different chemicals are used today, and that 5,000 new chemical substances are added each year. In addition our bodies are exposed to natural toxins like pollen, dust, animal dander, and smoke.

- Body pollution is at the most toxic levels ever recorded in human history. Sadly, our immunity system can not keep pace and we are falling victim to disease and cancer in greater and greater numbers. Consider that in 1960; only one out of 30 people were diagnosed with cancer. Today it is 1 out of every 5 people. The quality of living due to poor health is deteriorating at an ever faster pace.

- An unbelievable 20% of our adult population has some form of cancer whereas rates as low as 4% or less exist in countries with little medical infrastructure. Of all the world’s developed countries, the US has the highest mortality rates. Heart disease, cancer, neurological disease (Alzheimer’s), diabetes, obesity, hormone imbalance, and organ dysfunction are so commonplace today that people have become desensitized to the reasons why these horrible afflictions exist as they do now. Just 100 years ago, these diseases were rare and not commonplace to the human species.

- In 1989 alone, EPA estimates, in its Toxic Release Inventory National Report, that 1.9 billion pounds of chemical were dumped into our nation's water systems. In that same year, 2.4 billion pounds of chemicals were released into the atmosphere; with the total chemical attack on the environment estimated at 5.7 billion pounds.

Today, your water supply is contaminated with mercury, chlorine, estrogen, estrogen mimickers, fluoride, organophosphates and even residual Prozac and pharmaceuticals that cannot be filtered out by water treatment plants. Food now comes from soil stripped of nutrients, filled with artificial fertilizers and pesticides. Animals are now grown in factories with steroids, antibiotics, stress, and cheaper abnormal feed. Air is filled with a host of pollutants and contains 30% less oxygen by content as compared to just 100 years ago. The result is in an environment that the human body has never had to deal with before in its entire history. At a certain point, after years of toxic onslaught, your defense system is unable to keep up and disease is able to take hold.

- The air, food, soil, and environment we exist with are so toxic, polluted, and artificially saturated that the body cannot keep pace with the constant cell repair it must perform on a daily basis. After years of toxicity buildup, the body loses the battle and cancer sets in and flourishes. Modern prescriptions and techniques are reactionary and wait for you to develop a disease before you are treated.

We need to maintain immunity levels and additionally support your immune system to combat the daily ravages your body suffers. And for this purpose we need to detoxify our whole body.

Detoxification process will allow a cleaner personal environment (both inside and out) to be reestablished as a new basis for health. And the basic tool for accomplishing this is knowledge. It won't necessarily be genetics, or money, or social class that determines who is healthy in the 21st Century.

'Natural Sweeteners' - A natural substitute of sweets

Eliminating sugar from our diet is not the solution to the weight gain problem. We can easily replace our sweet needs with man-made, processed, natural sweeteners. With processed sugar, the body has been tricked into feeling satisfied, when in fact, the sweetness is completely deficient in essential vitamins, minerals, trace minerals and enzymes which would normally be present.

What are Natural sweeteners?

According to a definition: 'A sugar substitute is a food additive that duplicates the effect of sugar or corn syrup in taste, but usually has less food energy.'

Now you can buy natural sweeteners 'Erythritol' and 'Xylitol'online. http://www.emeraldforestxylitol.com/
offers highest quality all natural sweeteners and snacks like Gums, Mints, Fruit Sours, and Coffee Shots containing delicious natural sweeteners, flavors, and colors.

Emerald Forest Sugar, Inc. uses 100% erythritol crystals made from sugar. Pharmaceutical-grade xylitol is from non-genetically modified, pesticide-free corn.
More about natural sweeteners:

"Erythritol"
is a natural sweetener that looks and tastes like sugar, yet has only 5% of sugar’s calories or 0.2 calories per gram. Erythritol is approximately 70% as sweet as cane sugar (sucrose). It does not affect blood sugar or insulin levels

"Xylitol" is a naturally occurring sweetener primarily derived from plant sources and has many surprising benefits. Classified as a low calorie (2.4 calories per gram), low carbohydrate natural sweetener, xylitol is considered beneficial for your teeth and completely safe for diabetics. It has no toxicity and has not been linked to any form of disease.'

Tips to ease your stress/depression

Mostly, whenever we face a physical or mental problem, there is a pharmacological subscription suggested from the doctor. And in most cased, when the problem is related to mind or psychological, only anti-depressants are the first suggestion from the doctor. But we know that the antidepressant medication have many side effects. Moreover it is not the cure for the problem, only a temporary relief.

People are also looking for non-pharmacologic relief of illness, including depression. Unfortunately, the evidence to support the effectiveness of alternative therapies against the disease isn't strong. Alternative or complementary therapies probably won't do much to ease really serious depression, but for mild depression or anxiety, some tips can be helpful.
For any form of mild depression, all of these things can help:

One study released about five years ago, found that exercise could be a major weapon against depression.
"Exercise, at least when performed in a group setting, seems to be at least as effective as standard antidepressant medications in reducing symptoms in patients with major depression," said researcher James Blumenthal, a professor of medical psychology at Duke University.

His team's study found that 10 months of regular, moderate exercise reduced depressive symptoms at a rate equal to that of Zoloft.
Another study, this time by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, found that 30-minute workouts done three to five times a week could cut depressive sy Even less vigorous activities, such as T'ai chi or yoga, may help lower blood pressure and ease stress, Marsh said. "People who exercise also tend to feel that they have more control over their life," she added. That's important, since a persistent feeling of helplessness is a hallmark of depression.

According to Marsh, the science is much less clear when it comes to the effectiveness of supplements and herbal medicines. For example, there's little good data to support the use of either foliate or the B vitamins in warding off the blues.
Perhaps the most talked-about herbal therapy for depression is St. John's wart, but "the evidence that it can help moderate-to-severe depression is very poor,"
Non-pharmacologic interventions such as massage therapy, acupuncture or aromatherapy are great at easing short-term stress, "but the real issue, when it comes to depression, is what the effect is over the long term?
One thing the science does show, however, is that contacts with others -- friends, family, clubs and group activities -- can boost mood and help ease depression.

These tips can improve your mental well being, as well as your physical well being.

I am including here 2 self screening tests, which are free to use, provided by Department of Psychiatry (NYU Medical Center/NYU School of Medicine)

The Online Anxiety Screening Test

The Online Depression Screening Test

KEEP IN MIND: that these preliminary screening tests are for depressive symptoms that do not replace in any way a formal psychiatric evaluation. It is designed to give a preliminary idea about the presence of mild to moderate depressive symptoms that indicate the need for an evaluation by a psychiatrist.

Effects of stress and depression on our lives

Do you think that you are suffering from some kind of stress or depression?

If so, then you should seriously think about the worst thing which can heppen to you and effect the people around you. I have been a depressed person and after realizing the negative effects on my life I chose meditation and during that time of stress, I started teaching. Both worked like miracle to me and today I feel like a new person who is getting most out of its life. Let's see what happens when you are depressed or face stress for long time?

Few days ago, switching from one channel to another at T.V, I came across Oprah’s repeate telecast show.

I love to watch this show whenever I get free time and topic is appealing to me.
Oprah was talking to a good looking guy, inquiring about intentions behind the murder of his wife. And mentally disturbed person, who was sure a worse case of depression, told Oprah that he brutally killed his wife because he was suffering from the feeling of loneliness, nobody was to talk or share with him. And if there was a situation that he could talk with someone, the situation would be different.
According to a report from ‘National Institute of Mental Health’ “Serious depression can destroy family life as well as the life of the ill person.

Symptoms of depression:

It is not necessary that everyone who is depressed or manic experiences every symptom. Some people experience a few symptoms, some many.

Severity of symptoms varies with individuals and also varies over time.DepressionPersistent sad, anxious, or "empty" moodFeelings of hopelessness, pessimismFeelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessnessLoss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sexDecreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisionsInsomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleepingAppetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gainThoughts of death or suicide; suicide attemptsRestlessness, irritabilityPersistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic painManiaAbnormal or excessive elationUnusual irritabilityDecreased need for sleepGrandiose notionsIncreased talkingRacing thoughtsIncreased sexual desireMarkedly increased energyPoor judgmentInappropriate social behavior.

Most people with a depressive illness do not seek treatment; although the great majority evens those whose depression is extremely severe can be helped. Thanks to years of fruitful research, there are now medications and psychosocial therapies such as cognitive/behavioral, "talk" or interpersonal that eases the pain of depression.Unfortunately, many people do not recognize that depression is a treatable illness. If you feel that you or someone you care about is one of the many undiagnosed depressed persons, these in formations may help you take the steps that may save your own or someone else's life.In one of my articles, I have mentioned benefits of meditation, and with proud I can say that I have cured my depression by keeping me busy and regular practice of meditation. Keeping me busy was not a solution, unless meditation was there.

Dear readers! Did you come across to some stories, where depression or stress was cured by any other way? Why don’t we share with each other our experiences, as our discussion may save many families and lives?
